Board and Train
Choosing the Right Board & Train Program
More than obedience: The right program shapes your dog’s future, not just their commands.
Built for real life: Training develops communication, trust, emotional stability, and control that carry into everyday environments.
Time matters: The more time invested, the more reliable your dog becomes under pressure, around distractions, and in unfamiliar settings.
Progressive development: Our programs are structured in levels—each additional week means deeper exposure, stronger accountability, and clearer expectations.
Proofed, not rushed: Behaviors are developed, challenged, and maintained across multiple environments, not rushed for quick results.
Shortcuts don’t last: Fast programs may create temporary improvement; structured programs create lasting change.
Reliability over repetition: Longer programs focus on consistency and mindset—not just repeating commands.
You’re not just paying for training time. You’re investing in:
A calmer, more confident dog
Clearer communication between you and your dog
Stronger impulse control and emotional regulation
A relationship built on structure, trust, and understanding
This is training that carries forward—long after your dog returns home.

Personal Protection Program
Personal protection training isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every dog must first go through a comprehensive evaluation to determine if they have the mindset, drive, and temperament required for this type of work. We assess key traits such as:
Attitude: Confidence, focus, and emotional stability
Drive: Motivation to work and respond under pressure
Mentality: Ability to remain controlled and perform reliably in high-stress situations
Not every dog is built for protection work, and we are upfront about that—safety, control, and suitability come first.
Once a dog is cleared for training, our program progresses through structured levels designed to build skills systematically:
Basic/Foundation: Awareness, obedience under distraction, and controlled alert behaviors
Advanced/Protection Skills: Guard work, controlled response, and personal protection exercises
Levels of Work: From Alert dogs (awareness and early warning) to Guard dogs (property and family protection) to Full Protection dogs (personal protection under high-pressure scenarios)
Each level builds on the previous, ensuring dogs develop confidence, control, and reliability at every stage. Training focuses on precision, mindset, and real-world readiness, rather than flashy or unsafe techniques.
The B-9 Approach
A clear path from evaluation to real-world reliability
1. Evaluate
Every dog starts here
We assess temperament, drive, confidence, stress response, and lifestyle needs. This step determines proper placement and realistic goals—no guessing, no forced programs.
⬇️
2. Communicate
Clarity before control
Dogs learn clear expectations and how to respond. This builds a shared language between dog and handler and eliminates confusion.
⬇️
3. Engage
Motivation with purpose
Training stays engaging and intentional. We build focus, drive, and willingness to work without creating stress or avoidance.
⬇️
4. Structure
Consistency creates stability
Once understanding is in place, structure and accountability are layered in. Dogs learn consistency, follow-through, and better decision-making.
⬇️
5. Proof
Results that hold up in real life
Behavior is tested and reinforced in real environments—distractions, pressure, and everyday situations—so training translates outside of sessions.
⬇️
6. Maintain
Support beyond training
We educate handlers and provide guidance to maintain structure, reinforce behavior, and protect results long-term.
I’m Brandon Howell, the proud owner and founder of B-9 Paws Dog Training, and my journey here has been anything but traditional — but every step led me to my purpose.
I graduated from the illustrious Norfolk State University on May 7, 2022 — a date that’s even more special because it’s also my birthday. Earning my Bachelor of Science in Biology as a Cum Laude student with a 3.6 GPA, I had my eyes set on becoming an orthopedic surgeon. As a lifelong athlete and college basketball player, I knew the value of discipline, hard work, and commitment — values that I still carry with me in everything I do.
That summer, I was accepted into a prestigious program at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and while it was an honor, something inside me began to shift. My heart started pulling me in a different direction.
Not long after, I became a nurse at Urology of Virginia, working side-by-side with more than 25 doctors, nurses, and PAs. I loved helping people — but I realized my calling was bigger, deeper, and uniquely mine.
Like many of us, COVID changed everything. I brought home my first dog, just wanting a companion. What started off as teaching a few basic commands quickly turned into something that caught people’s attention. The way I connected with dogs… it felt natural. Some even called it a God-given gift.
That passion turned into purpose — and B-9 Paws Dog Training was born.
Today, I’m a traveling dog trainer, working with dogs and families across the country to build stronger bonds, teach clear communication, and bring peace into their homes. My mission is to not only train dogs but empower their owners— holding both dog and human accountable so that growth happens on both ends of the leash.
This isn’t just about obedience. It’s about creating better lifestyles — for you and your pup. Whether we’re working in your home, on the road, or virtually, I bring knowledge, patience, and heart to every session.
I’m grateful for where I’ve been, and even more excited about where I’m headed. And I’d be honored to be part of your journey too.
Let’s train. Let’s grow. Let’s thrive — together.
